How long have you been supporting/involved with Cville Pride?
In addition to working at 106.1 The Corner, I’m also a member of Gorilla Theater Productions here in Charlottesville. LGBTQ positivity is a part of our mission as a company so it was important to us to become a certified Safe Space and that’s how we met the team at Cville Pride. That was over a year ago and we’ve been collaborating ever since.
I had only just started to get involved with pride back in Boston (where I’m from) before I moved here. When I came to interview at The Corner Jeff Sweatman took me around town and made a point to tell me about Pride. I knew that if I ended up working here I would definitely want to be involved in some way.
I was out of town for the last two, this will be my first one!
Come out to show your own pride, obviously, but also to support your family members, your friends, your neighbors, your co-workers. Let’s all be one big community together.
I’ve lived in Charlottesville for less than three years so I can’t speak to what the area was like before, but something that I think is fantastic is the youth involvement. At GTP we have a teen theater troupe and whether they identify as members of the LGBTQ community or as allies they’re always stoked at festival time and for UnProm and all of the other amazing youth opportunities Cville Pride provides. Seeing the next generation being so free and excited to be who they are and the support that they give to each other is an absolutely beautiful thing.
Kendall Stewart, Music Director/Mid-day Host for 106.1 The Corner, will be broadcasting LIVE from the Cville Pride Festival, Sept. 15.
