July 8: A Day of Community Building


In response to negative events, especially the KKK rally planned on Saturday, many people and organizations have planned positive, community-building events on July 8th:

  • 9 am – 11:30 amUnity Day at Jefferson School City Center – education and discussion opportunities.
    • 9 am – Meditation led by Common Grounds in the JSCC Park
    • 9:30 am – Gospel in the Heritage Center
    • 10 am – KKK to the Alt Right A History
    • 10 am – For our Youth – Isabella Gibbons Local History Center @ JSAAHC
    • 10:30 am – Charlottesville, Who are we?
    • 11 am – Break Outs: Presentation by Office of Human Rights, BLM, Stress Management
  • 11:30 am – 1:30 pmThe People’s Picnic and Community Celebration (potluck) – IX Art Park
  • 1 pm – 5 pmClergy Collective at United Methodist Church (UMC) – prayer, music, etc.
  • 3-4 pm is the stated time for the KKK rally in Justice (Stonewall Jackson) Park
  • 2 pmMusicians Mobilized Against the Klan – Downtown Mall
  • 2 pm – 6 pm
    • Unity Cville Concert at Sprint Pavilion, featuring We are Star Children, Chamomile and Whiskey, and more!
    • NAACP event at Jack Jouett Middle School – “Steadfast and Immovable” – all are welcome. We will empower positive energy!
  • 10 pm – midnightSPLC Fundraiser with DJ TOVA – Rapture

Please consider attending one of these events if you feel comfortable. Please consider doing something positive for social justice that day, and every day. If you are attending any events in the downtown area especially, plan ahead for contingencies. Have a buddy, carry water, and have an exit strategy. And, please, spread love.

  1. Another event to consider on Saturday. is DrumUP! (drumming for universal peace) at The Front Porch Music School at 221 East Water Street. This community drum circle usually is 11-noon, but this week will start at 11:30. Drums and instruments are provided. Free and everyone welcome.
