This day-long event will offer trainings, seminars for mental health, medical providers throughout Central Virginia

April 26, 2016, Charlottesville, VA – The first-ever Trans Health Symposium will take place April 27, 8:30 a.m. -5:00 p.m. at the Auditorium of the African American Heritage Center at Jefferson School City Center. Presented by the Transgender Health Alliance of Central Virginia (THACV), the symposium aims to help medical providers and therapists develop skills and acquire resources to provide affirming healthcare to transgender and gender nonconforming individuals.

“We’re expecting over 130 people to attend,” says Amy-Sarah Marshall of Cville Pride, one of the event’s sponsors. “The need is great. The trans population in this area, from kids as young as 8 to individuals over 70, has boomed. Most providers don’t know the resources available and the best practices of care. We’re hoping to fill that huge gap.”

Featuring educational workshops with physicians from UVA’s Transgender Health Clinic, as well as Safe Space Training provided by the Charlottesville Area Safe Space Trainers coalition,  the symposium will cover critical topics that include:

  • Treating youth with gender dysphoria
  • Primary care needs
  • Creating a safe, supportive environment
  • Addressing concerns for an aging transgender population
  • Hormone therapy in adults
  • Care of chronic diseases
  • Diagnosis and communications

Prior to the opening of the UVA Transgender Health Clinic last year, families with children experiencing gender dysphoria – a medical condition that describes the distress caused when one’s gender identity does not match one’s biological sex  – had to travel out of state to find healthcare.

But even with this clinic now serving the needs of area trans youth, Karen Barker of the THACV, explains that to adequately care for the trans community, providers throughout the area need to be able to provide supportive, informed care. “We’re talking about a segment of our population that faces daily discrimination on every level; this symposium is a step in the right direction in providing trans people safe places where providers have the education and ability to support their health and wellbeing.”

  1. Hello,

I attended the Trans Health Symposium on 4/27/16. I was under the impression that I would receive CEU’s for the conference but have not as of yet. I filled something out at the conference that I thought was for CEU’s. I am not really sure who to get in touch with or how to do so, so I saw this comment section and thought I would give it a try. I am an LPC.

Thanks in advance for any help or direction you are able to provide.
